Hey, I'm Coach Jamie!
If you had told me that when I was growing up, I would have probably laughed and then said something along the lines of, “Yeah, right!”
Growing up, life was not easy. I was one of those kids who should have been removed from my home but was not. My dad was physically and mentally abusive. My mom, being overwhelmed with it all, would leave us with my dad for months at a time. We would have no clue if she was coming back or if she was gone for good.
I remember very clearly one day, as an 8-year-old girl, hiding behind the couch with
my sister as we tried to avoid the wrath of my dad. I remember thinking to myself, “I wish
I was dead.” Then, immediately after thinking that thought, I felt God speak so clearly to
my heart, only at the time I didn’t realize it was God. As you can probably tell, I didn’t grow
up a Christian. But in that moment, God said to me, “You’re alive for a reason. I want you to
find out what it is.” Those words would forever shape my future. Being the determined person
that God created me to be, I said, “Okay! Fine. If I’m alive for a reason, I will find out why.”
I wish I could say that my life was beautiful from that point on, that all my troubles went away, but I would be lying if I did say that. My life actually began to get worse…way worse! Thankfully, in the summer of my 6th grade year my dad did leave our home, but by that time I was completely broken. I was completely numb on the inside. I felt like everyone who was supposed to love me hated me.
Over the next 6 years, I would go on and enter into relationships, looking for love in all the wrong places. Then finally, during my senior year in high school my best friend invited me to her church one Sunday. It was there that I heard for the first time who God was. I mean, I did grow up in the Bible Belt, so I had heard about Him my whole life, but this is when I began to get a revelation of Who He was and how much He loved me. Who knew that this one invitation would be the beginning to discovering the reason I was alive.
After graduating from high school, I had the incredible honor of serving at a Christian Camp as a cook. Being a cook of the camp, we didn’t get to interact with the campers much, but I remember one night during my first summer at the camp that I had the opportunity of sitting down with some girls and began to hear their stories. These girls were from the youth home next door to where the camp was located. These girls were completely broken on the inside. It was in these moments of sharing the hope of Jesus with them, that God spoke to me again and said, “This is your purpose.” I knew from that moment on that my life was going to be dedicated to serving teens.
I am so incredibly blessed and thankful that God chose me to serve these amazing young people. Since this night, I went on to serve at the camp for a total of 3 years. I, then went on to get married to my amazing husband and for the past 14 years, we have had the honor of serving together in our church’s youth ministry.
God is now taking our ministry to the next level!
This is why we have created #Uncommon. Did you know that only 4% of our teens in America are projected to be Bible-believing Christians after they graduate high school? When I first heard this statistic, it broke my heart and I knew it was time to rise up and do something about it.
Almost major revival in Christianity started with teens and I have no doubt it will happen again. However, it’s tough to be a Christian in today’s culture. It’s tough to find like-minded friends who truly love God and live their life for them, but don’t be deceived, they are out there. They are everywhere. We see them in our youth ministry making a huge difference for the Lord.
#Uncommon is designed to bring youth together who love the Lord and desire to make a difference for Him. It’s a place where teens can go to be encouraged and supported by other teens as they walk out their faith. It’s also a place where youth will begin to discover their purpose and learn how to practically make a difference in the lives of those around them.
Are you ready for a next step?! How can I serve you?!
